OBITUARY:

Paula M. Anderson, a resident of the Portland community, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 21, 2008, at the Hopewell House in Portland.
Graveside services were held privately. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on her birthday, Oct. 10, at the Cedar Hills United Church of Christ; 11695 SW Park Way in Portland.
Paula was born in Corvallis. She was one of four children born to Everett and Evelyn (Gritton) Joeckel. She lived with her family in Dayton and then moved to Gaston in 1955 to live on the family farm. She attended Gaston High School and was involved in many student activities. She was a graduate from the Class of 1963. Paula went on to attend Portland State University.
She was married to David Anderson in 1966 in Forest Grove. They lived in Clatskanie, Sherwood and Hillsboro where they raised their two daughters. They divorced in 1988.
Paula was first and foremost a mother to her daughters. She was very active in their lives shuttling them to gymnastics, softball and community theater practices. Many weekends were spent at Mt. Hood where the entire family enjoyed skiing. She was a wonderful grandmother (Mim) and loved to babysit her three grandchildren and often took them fishing.
She loved the outdoors and enjoyed mountain climbing, camping and hiking. She climbed three mountains including Mt. Hood as a member of the Mazamas. She was an active member of her church, Cedar Hills United Church of Christ. Paula was an avid sports fan and would follow the Portland Trailblazers and college basketball.
She worked as a school secretary and education aide for several local school districts including, Vancouver, Wash., The Dalles, Hillsboro, and Beaverton School Districts.
Survivors include her two daughters and a son-in-law, Shannon and Greg Meythaler of Portland, Morgan Anderson of Beaverton; three siblings and their spouses, Terry and Cathy Joeckel, Mark Joeckel, Kevin and Lisa Joeckel; three grandchildren, Andrew, Alex and Kaelyn; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents.
Thank you to all of Paula's caregivers and friends for providing her and her family with love and support during her courageous battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
The family suggests donations placed in Paula's name to the ALS Assoc. or the Cedar Hills United Church of Christ Endowment Fund.
