OBITUARY: 

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, in Spring Valley Church in Salem for John Henry Miller, who was an engineer for Pacific Northwest Bell for 30 years, and lived in Portland for 25 years before moving to Salem in 1972. He was a World War II veteran.

John Henry Miller, June 4, 1915-December 1, 2006

Salem – John was born June 4, 1915 in Wolf Creek, Oregon to Agnes and George Miller. John married Mary Hackett on March 26, 1935. After his marriage he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a teletype operator. During World War II he served in the Navy in San Diego, California. After his service in the Navy he worked in Redding, California for the phone company. In 1947 he moved to Portland, Oregon to work for 30 years for Pacific NW Bell Telephone Co. Shortly before his retirement he moved to Salem and built a house on the Windsor Century farm that belongs to Mary’s family. At this time he began the DePoe Bay marina and enjoyed the business and fishing. After retirement John began West Coast Cable TV Systems, Inc out of Gleneden Beach, Oregon. He sold the cable TV company to resume his love of mining in Josephine County, Oregon. He began three mining companies before his death. In 1990 John and Mary moved off the family farm in Lincoln to live in Salemtowne. John was known for his trust in all he met and did business with. John is survived by Mary, his wife of 71 years; daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn Gayle and Dale F. Evans of Tigard; grandson, Michael J. Evans of Gresham; and great-grandchildren, Emily E. and Ethan M. Evans of Gresham. His brother, Ronald V. Miller of Salem and Summerlakes, Arizona, preceded him in death. A Memorial Service will be at 1 pm Saturday, December 9, 2006 at Spring Valley Church, Zena, Ore. Memorial contributions may be made to Spring Valley Church Missionary Fund or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
