BIOGRAPHY - No family in Marion county stands high in popular esteem than do Mr and Mrs A.N. Fulkerson, the former of whom owns and operated a splendid fruit farm adjoining the city of Salem, while the latter is rendering able and appreciated service as county superintendent of schools. Mr Fulkerson was born at Holmes Gap, Polk county, Oregon, and is a son of William Holt and Sarah Jane (Craven) Fulkerson, the former born in Clay county, Missouri, on October 23, 1840, while the latter was born in Ray county, that state, in 1845. William H. Fulkerson crossed the plains, with ox teams, in 1847 with his parents, James Monroe and Mary (Miller) Fulkerson. His father bought one hundred and sixty acres of land at Holmes Gap, which he later sold to his son, William H., and moved to Oak Grove, Oregon, where he and his wife spent their remaining years, both dying in 1882. James M. Fulkerson was very prominent in the affairs of his county and state, having served several years as county judge of Polk county, was afterwards elected a member of the Oregon legislature and was also a member of the constitutional convention that formed the state of Missouri.

William H. Fulkerson was educated in the district schools and at McMinnville College, which his father had helped to found. He engaged in farming on the land originally owned by his father in Polk county, where he remained until 1872, when he sold that place and bought one hundred and sixty acres of land in Polk county, two and one half miles west of Salem. There he farmed until 1891, when he sold out and went to Monmouth, Oregon, where he bought a lumber yard, to which he devoted his attention for two years. He then went to eastern Oregon, where he bought a ranch, on which he lived until about 1918, when he sold it and came to Salem, where he lived until his death, which occurred May 5, 1926. His wife died in November, 1900. To them were born three children, namely: A.N., Pearl and Mrs Fay Saunders, both living in Seaside, Oregon.

A.N. Fulkerson secured his education in the public schools of Polk county and graduated from the State Normal School at Monmouth. He taught school for seventeen years in Polk, Linn, Lane, Yamhill and Columbia counties, following that profession until after his marriage, in 1898, when he bought fifteen acres of land located just outside the southern city limits of Salem. This land was covered with stumps and brush, practically all of which he has cleared off and planted to fruit, consisting mainly of strawberries and mixed tree fruits. He has shown practical judgment in his operation of the place, maintaining his orchard at the highest standard of excellence, and finds a ready market among discriminating buyers in Salem. He had made many substantial improvements on his place and has a very comfortable and attractive home.

In 1898 Mr Fulkerson was united in marriage to Miss Mary L. Stanton, who is a native of Minnesota and a daughter of Harvey H. and Mary (Rahn) Stanton. Her father, who was born in Ohio, died in February, 1902, and her mother, who was a native of Germany, died in November, 1923. They were the parents of two children, Mrs Fulkerson and H.H. Stanton, who is superintendent of the gas works in Salem. Mrs Fulkerson came to Oregon with her parents in 1887 and completed her education at the State Normal School at Monmouth. She taught school for several years prior to her marriage, afterwards served two years as school supervisor, and for the past eight years has been county superintendent of schools of Marion county, in which position she has rendered capable and effective service. During his teaching career, Mr Fulkerson served two years as superintendent of the schools of Corvallis, Benton county. He is a member of Chemeketa Lodge NO 1, IOOF, at Salem, the first lodge of that order organized in Oregon. He also belongs to the Knights of the Maccabees, and is a member of the Marion County Community federation, of which he was president two years and secretary one year. He also helped to organize the Salem Heights Community Club, of which he is still a member. He stands consistently for good schools and improved highways and is regarded as one of his community’s most progressive and enterprising men. Possessing wide general information and well defined opinions, he had exerted his influence in the direction of advancement and progress along material, civic and moral lines, while in the conduct of his present business he has shown himself an expert horticulturalist and practical business man. Mrs Fulkerson is regarded as one of the best county superintendents Marion county has ever had and under her supervision the schools are doing very efficient and satisfactory work. Mrs Fulkerson has engaged in institute work in every county in Oregon. She has also worked along the same lines in Montana and West Virginia, specializing in primary and rural methods. She also served one year as president of the Oregon State Teachers Association. Mr and Mrs Fulkerson are widely acquainted and are deservedly popular throughout the communities in whose interests they have played an active part.
