OSBH DC (Polk County 1926) #134 - John Edward Phillips, male, farmer, married, b. 15 Apr 1844 in St. Louis, Missouri, d. 20 Dec 1926 near Zena, Oregon at the age of 82 yrs (lived in town 79 yrs, name of father John Phillips (b. England), maiden name of mother Elizabeth Church (b. England), interment Zena; informant Mrs. Greta Hiatt of Salem.

OBITUARY: 

John E. Phillips, a pioneer of 1845, died December 20 at his farm home near Zena, in the vicinity of Salem. He was 82 years of age.
Mr. Phillips was born in St. Louis, Mo., and crossed the plains with his parents in 1845. Joe Meek was the leader of the caravan. The family settled first at Oregon City, then moved to St. Paul, where his father, John Phillips, finished the first church built in Oregon. In 1847 the family moved to the vicinity of Zena, where Mr. Phillips has resided continuously since that date.
Mr. Phillips was married in 1876 to Jane Skaife. She died in 1893. He later married Mrs. Clara Dawson, who survives him. He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Greta Hiat Dawson of Portland.
