OBITUARY:
Truman O. Bevens, aged 86 years, died at the home of his son, Manley W. Bevens, in Dallas Monday, April 25, following an illness of several weeks. Mr. Bevens was an Oregon pioneer of 1854 and was widely known in Polk county where he had spent practically his entire life. Mr. Bevens was born in St Joseph, Missouri, June 9, 1841, and at the age of 13 years started across the plains with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Hudson J. Bevens. The 13-year-old boy was given the job of driver of one of the family’s ox teams, a task which he performed throughout the long and difficult journey. The family first settled in Yamhill county, but soon came south to Kings Valley. Mr. Bevens was married December 30, 1864, to Mary Ellen Grant. They bought a ranch in Kings Valley, but later moved to Pedee where they lived practically their entire wedded life. Mrs. Bevens died at her home at Pedee on July 13, 1924. Mr. Bevens came to Dallas in the fall of 1925 and has made his home with his son since that time. During the greater part of his 73 years residence in Oregon Mr. Bevens followed the life of a rancher and farmer. He had come to the Pedee country when it was a virgin country and had known all the hardships of pioneer life.
His death leaves but three of the Hudson Bevens family of 12 children. Mr. Bevens was the father of eight children, four of whom survive. He also leaves 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. The children are: Gilbert J. Bevens, Airlie, Hudson J. Bevens, Pedee, Mrs. H.G. Hastings, Albany, and Manley W. Bevens, Dallas. The three surviving brothers are T.P. Bevens, Kings Valley, Jeff Bevens, Dallas and F.D. Bevens, Corvallis. Funeral services were held Wedenesday at 10 am at the Henkle chapel. Rev Orville D. Peterson, pastor of the First Christian church of Dallas, officiated. Burial was in the Womer cemetery at Pedee beside his wife.
