OBITUARY:
Mrs. T.J. Alsip attended the recent Farmers Union state convention in Sheridan. On her way home in the Mistletoe district she stopped for a visit with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Alsip northwest of Monmouth. She complained of not feeling well and was persuaded to stay overnight. By morning she was worse, pneumonia developed and she passed away on Sunday, June 5. Mary Susan Davis was born in Racine, Wisconsin, August 13, 1873. When a child of five her parents moved onto a homestead in the eastern part of Brookings county, South Dakota, which at that time was Dakota territory. There she encountered the trials and hardships of the prairie settlers. Later she clerked in her father’s store and post office at Bushnell. She married Thomas Jefferson Alsip in 1894 and they lived on a farm near Bushnell until they moved to Albany, Oregon where they lived nine years. They came to Dallas in 1909 and later bought the Mistletoe district farm which has since been her home.
She had the parental instinct and was a grandmother not only to her own kindred but to other children with whom she came in contact. With her late husband she took a warm interest in welfare work. They were early day Grangers and when the Farmers Union came to the county she became a charter member of the Dallas local. She attended the last eight state conventions. She was an exhibitor and a consistent winner of premiums at the Polk county fair.
She is survived by four sons: Vern, Russell, Henry and Frank. Two children died in infancy and another son Hal died at the age of 25. She leaves also seven grandchildren; two sisters, Maybelle Breisford and Saide Hanson; and a brother, George W. Davis, all of South Dakota.
Funeral services, conducted by the Smith-Baun mortuary were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Monmouth Christian church with Rev W.A. Elkins officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Riddell sang.
Burial was in the Brown cemetery near Dallas. The bearers were: G.A. Schroeder, L.W. Plummer, A.G. Rempel, Wesley Elliott, L.H. McBee of Dallas; and Eben Ray of Valley Junction. Mrs Alsip was a member of the Daniel David clan of which 52 members served in the World War, two as Red Cross nurses. Her husband T.J. Alsip was killed in an automobile accident in eastern Oregon in 1930.
