Mrs. W. C. BROWN DEAD
Polk County Pioneer Died at Her Home in Dallas
Mrs. Martha J. Brown died at the family residence in this city, Saturday, November 19, 1899, aged 73 years and 9 days.
She was the oldest child of James Townsend, and was born in Howard county, Missouri, November 10, 1826.
Her father having died in her early girlhood, she came to Oregon across the plains with her widowed mother in 1847, and settled in Polk county. She was married to W. C. Brown, August 2, 1848, and lived on their donation land claim adjoining town and in Dallas ever since. Her brother, John Townend, of Sheridan, is the only survivor of the original pioneer family.
Aunt Martha, as she was known to her friends, was a kind-hearted, charitable woman, and was greatly beloved by all. Her neighbors, especially those of the early days in Polk county, will ever remember her many deeds of kindness and her willingess at all times to minister to the needs of the poor and those upon whom the heavy hand of affliction had fallen. She was a member of the M. E. Church, south, and her daily life was that of a faithful and sincere Christian. She raised a family of five children - John G. Brown, Mrs. Wm. Kersey, Joseph Brown, Alonzo Brown and Henry M. Brown - all of whom, with her husband, were present at her death.
The funeral was from the M. E. Church, South, on Monday afternoon, and was largely attended, humdreds of people being unable to gain admission to the building. The buisness houses of the city were all closed during the services. The remains were deposited in their final resting place in the stone vault in the family graveyard on the old home place north of town.
