Leo Lehto, 90, of Monmouth died Nov. 23. He was born in Duluth, Minn., to Elmer and Ida Lehto. Leo completed high school, and as the United States entered World War II he proudly enlisted into the Navy, where he faithfully served his country. He served on many ships and saw combat in the South Pacific. He later married Josephine Douglas and they had two sons, Alan and Gary. Leo was a baseball fan and enjoyed going to Los Angeles Dodgers' games. He also enjoyed swimming, family time, camping, traveling and was an avid pinochle player. He and Josephine took a year away to travel in their RV around the country. He was a deeply religious man who loved God. Leo was a member of Monmouth Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine. On the day of his death, his sister, Aileen Papiro, also died. Survivors include his sons, Alan (Bindy) Lehto of Monmouth and Gary Lehto of Keizer; brother, Melvin Lehto of Lavern, Calif.; and 15 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Graveside service was Nov. 27 at Smith Cemetery in Monmouth. Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center handled arrangements. To send an online condolence:
