OBITUARY:
John H. Smith was born in Missouri in 1824 and in 1846 came with his parents to the Luckiamute region. He married Martha, daughter of David Lewis, at a date early enough for each of them to take a donation claim. He first set stakes where L.W. Loughary now lives at the Burn’s Mill, but made no filing and afterwards bought Wm Gage’s right to the claim upon which he lived from that date until his death last Friday. In 1847 he went to Cayuse War and in 1849 to the California mines with the Simpsons, Gages, and others. He wintered near Sacramento with Wm Williams, who married a daughter of Fred Waymire. He leaves five sons, Henry, Layton, Oliver, Clinton, and Frank, and two daughters, Mary and Jane, who married two brothers named Rust east of the mountains. Mr. Smith was a quiet, unobtrusive man and consistent member of the Christian church. Polk County Itemizer, Friday, January 20, 1893, 3:4
