OBITUARY:
Martha (Jackson) Simpson was born in Franklin county, Tennessee, Nov. 8, 1815, and died Nov 22, 1912, aged 97 years and 14 days. She lived in Tennessee about 15 years, moving from there to Alabama where she lived three years. From Alabama she moved to Arkansas. After a residence there of about ten years she started for Oregon in 1844, spending one year in Missouri waiting for the making up of an emigrant train. In 1845, in company with many others, she endured the hardships and privations of a long, tedious journey across the plains, arriving in Oregon in October of that year and settling on the present home place December 2, 1845. She has, together with her family, been intimately connected with the development of the Willamette valley for 68 years. She professed a hope in Christ and joined the Baptist church in 1855, remaining a Baptist until by death she was transferred from the church militant to the church triumphant. She was married to Isaac M. Simpson in Lawrence county, Arkansas, August 16, 1835 and to this union was born four children, A.C., now deceased; M.W. of Elk City; Eliza Loughary and Isaac M. Jr of this place. There are eight grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. The funeral services were conducted by Elder, of the Monmouth Baptist church, the text chosen being I Chronicles 29:15, “Our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.” A large concourse of friends and neighbors attended the funeral services, at her late residence, and assisted in laying her body away in the family lot, in Smith’s cemetery, on the Luckiamute, beside her husband who preceded her to the spirit world more than a quarter of a century Monmouth Herald, Friday, November 29, 1912, 1:5
