OBITUARY: John Vincent Harmsen, 64, of 1340 Picture St, died March 22 of a heart attack while golfing at Ocean Shores, Wash. He was born Sept 17, 1917, in Murray County, Minn, where he farmed for several years. He attended the University of Minnesota School of Agriculture, and became a rural letter carrier in Lake Wilson, Minn, in 1950, retiring in 1980, when he moved to Independence. A veteran of World War II, he served in the South Pacific, 43rd Engineer Battalion. He served as chairman of the board for the Lake Wilson United Church, justice of the peace, president of the Community Fund, president of the Lake Wilson Community Club, and commander of the American Legion. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lyon Lodge No 29, Independence; the VFW in Slayton, Minn; Knights of Templar, in grand line of Royal Arch Masons; Osman Shrine Temple in St Paul, Minn; and El Riad, Sioux Falls, SD. He also served as past master of Masonic Lodge No 262 in Lake Wilson, and was past district representative of Grand Masters of Minnesota Masons for nine years. He attended Christ’s Church in Monmouth. Survivors include his wife, Joan of Independence, whom he married May 1, 1944; two sons, John of Independence and David of Moclips, Wash; three daughters, Linda of Hillsboro, Heather of Richfield, Minn, and Victoria of Independence; three brothers, Paul of Stayton, Mark of Happy Valley, Ore, and D. Ross of Plymouth, Minn; two sisters, Gwen Mihan of Hadley, Minn, and Jean Kasper of Lake Field, Minn; and one grandson. Funeral services were held Friday at Christ’s Church in Monmouth, with the Rev John Goff officiating, and ritualistic services by the local Lyon Lodge. Private vault interment was at the Fir Crest Cemetery, Monmouth. [marker at Smith cemetery]
