Sheridan “Joe” Much, Feb. 27, 1923-May 9, 1999
Sheridan “Joe” Dale Much of Monmouth died May 9 in Grand Junction Colo. He was 76. Born in Chicago to Frank M. and Ethel Holmberg Much, he graduated from Lake Charles High School and attended John McNeese Junior College in Chicago. He served in the US Marine Corps from 1942 through 1945, including 18 months in the Pacific Campaign of World War II. A 1947 graduate of Ursinus College in Collegeville, Penn, he was a three-sport athlete and elected to the Honor Society, Cub and Key. He married Juanita Wood Much in Boyertown, Penn. They were married 41 years. They moved to Oregon in 1961 and had lived in Monmouth since 1972. Juanita died in 1990. A sportswriter and editor for 20 years, he worked for newspapers in Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Texas, Colorado, Washington and Oregon. He received numerous awards for writing excellence. In 1965, while serving as sports editor of the Salem Capitol Journal, he was named Oregon’s Outstanding Sportswriter by the National Association of Sportswriters and Sportscasters. He served as executive director of the National Golf Foundation, traveling the western states from 1968 until he retired in 1988. While working for the foundation he manned offices in Florida and Kansas. He continued to work as a nationally-known golf consultant and free-lance contributor to various golf publications. He also served as executive secretary of the Oregon Golf Course Operators Association. A member of St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Independence, the Knights of Columbus, the Oregon Golf Course Superintendents Association, the Public Golf Commission of the United States Golf Association, the golf course rating panel of Golf Digest magazine and the Golf Writers Association of America, he also served on the board of directors of the Trusting Golf Club in Corvallis. Survivors include his companion, Angelina Bothwell of Grand Junction , Colo; sons, Jonathan “Kip” Much of Salem, Justin Much of Dayton, Ohio and John “Vance” Much of Bellingham, Wash; daughters, Sherry Much of Monmouth, Heidi Much McGrew of Miamisburg, Ohio and Jennifer Much Grund of Portland; and three grandchildren. Mass was held May 15 at St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Independence. Vault interment followed at Smith Cemetery in Monmouth under the direction of Farnstrom Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1425 NE Irving St Suite 100, Portland, Or 97323-2299 and the Susan G. Koleman Breast Cancer Foundation.
