OBITUARY:
Joan Gloria Galbraith
October 17, 1931-October 21, 2004
SALEM – Joan Gloria Galbraith was born to Clinton and Gula (Elder) Hedgepeth on Oct 17, 1931 at Grants Pass, Ore. She attended grade school in Tule Lake, Calif., and high school in Madras, Ore., where her parents farmed. She attended the University of Oregon, University of Hawaii and graduated from Oregon State University in home economics with minors in education, art, and sociology; she was affiliated with the Delta Gamma Sorority. Her career included teaching at Culver High School, working in publication of a monthly journal in Columbus, Ga, was the assistant librarian for the Agriculture room at the OSU library, and served as an educator for the recipients of surplus foods. After moving to Salem in 1967 she was in real estate sales for A. A. Larsen, and taught adult sewing classes for Chemeketa Community College. While teaching and developing Consumer Education curriculum at Chemeketa Community College, Joan designed some non-credit classes for senior adults and subsequently was selected to develop and guide College for Older Adults (now called the Retirement Planning Institute) for 20 years until her retirement. She was a member of PEO. She was named Oregon Community College Community Educator of the Year in 1987.
Following her retirement from Chemeketa Community College she started to share her passion for watercolor by sharing her skills with students in Chemeketa classes. She had shows of her painting in many of the local venues. She was a member of the Oregon Watercolor Society, active with Bush Barn, Keizer Art Association, and Silverton Art Association. She helped form a local critique group of artists, and continued to paint with a small group even as her health limited her teaching. Many of her students have become lifelong friends.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents and younger sister, Bunny Quinn Williams. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Gordon ‘Bud’ Galbraith; son, Kevin Galbraith of Long Beach, Calif; daughter, Gloria McIntosh of Salem; and two grandchildren, Ian Galbraith and Mariah McIntosh.
The family would like to thank all of the family and friends for their amazing support and prayers and a special thank you to her ‘Friday Ladies’ and the ‘Joan Galbraith Watercolor Society.’ Contributions may be made to Chemeketa Foundation, PO Box 14007, Salem, OR 97309-7070, Keizer Art Association, 980 Chemawa Rd NE, Keizer, OR 97303, watercolor Society of Oregon, c/o 100 Club/Education Fund, 6428 SE Reed Place, Portland, OR 97202-8264, or Willamette Valley Hospice, 1015 3rd St NW, Salem, OR 97304.
