OBITUARY:
Fir Grove: Lewis Kau passed away at the home of his sister Mrs Tilda Frantz of Hoskins, August 23, at the age of 88. He had been in poor health for several years. Mr Kau, or Uncle Louie, as he was known to his many young neighbors, was born in Wisconsin. The family moved to Polk county about 60 years ago. Most of that time they lived in this community. Mr Kau had six brothers and two sisters. They were Fred, Charlie, Ott, Henry, Annie, John, Frank and Tilda. All preceded him in death except Mrs Frantz, the youngest of the family. As a young man Lewis Kau rode the pony express between Independence and Albany. His father was a Civil War veteran. In his younger days Lewis liked to hunt with his brothers, neighbors and friends. Their sister Annie kept house for Lewis, John and Frank until her death many years ago. Then Frank took over the house work while his brothers farmed. John passed away several years ago and shortly after that their house and its contents burned to the ground. Lewis and Frank narrowly missed being burned to death. The brothers then moved to their sister’s home in Hoskins. Frank passed away about two years ago, which leaves Mrs Frantz alone. Her only son Orvel (Bob) Frantz, MM3/c, has been in the navy 3½ years. Her husband passed away many years ago and an older son Sam was killed while working for the railroad on a bridge construction job. Mr Kau chose his own pall bearers. They were Bev Freer, Ira Sullivan, Gus Jahn, Albert Ronco, Ira and Bill McBeth.
