| OBITUARY: George LaFrance, for over thirty years a resident of the Monmouth district, died Tuesday [Aug 22] from an affliction of the heart. He had been ailing for several months past. Funeral services are held this afternoon in the Smith-Baun mortuary, with Rev. David Walker officiating. Burial conducted by the Odd Fellows, will be in the Riggs cemetery near Dallas. Mr. LaFrance was born and reared in the vicinity of Mt. Clemens, Michigan. As a young man he worked in the logging camps in winter and did general farming in summer. One summer he changed the program and joined in a log drive down the Muskegon river in which 225 men participated. With the Michigan pine region cleared up, George came west and worked in camps in the vicinity of Olympia, Washington, in 1906. Two years later he came to Monmouth. His brother Henry was a farmer in the Mistletoe district. George first went to work on the Ireland place, then known as “Walnut Acres” south of Monmouth. After seven years with them he hired with Jacob Smith and was on the Smith farm something like 20 years. He became a dairyman looking after pure bred Jerseys. A few years ago he started to work for the Clow sisters where his work was with sheep. He was married in Michigan and became a widower but is survived by one child and grandchildren. George was a companionable man and made warm friends. He was an Odd Fellow with a membership of twenty years. He held all the offices in the lodge and was for a time a member of teams which did degree work. He was born April 9, 1868. Monmouth Herald 24 Aug 1939, 5:2-3 |
