OBITUARY:
Mrs. M. Alice Franklin, resident of Rt 2, Molalla, died Sunday night at a nursing home in Colton following an extended illness. Mrs. Franklin was born Aug 1, 1867, a daughter of the late John E. and Elizabeth Lewis on a donation land claim at Lewisville in Polk county. She married Clarence Franklin when 17 years of age. He preceded her in death in 1886. She attended OSC in Corvallis and later taught school and in 1902 moved to Portland where she was employed for 20 years.
Mrs. Franklin’s grandparents crossed the plains from Missouri in 1845. They put logs under their wagons for floats and drifted down the Columbia, arriving at Ft Vancouver in mid-winter. They crossed over to Portland and located in Polk county the following spring. Mrs. Franklin was related to Sam Simpson, Oregon’s poet laureate and her grandfather Simpson was one of the first Indian agents in Oregon.
Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Ruby Lewis of Molalla and several nieces and nephews. She made her home with her nephew, Frank Lewis on Rt 2, Molalla for many years. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct 26, at 11 a.m. at the Molalla chapel of Everhart & Kent and interment followed at the Old English cemetery south of Monmouth. Rev Luther Cornay officiated.
