OBITUARY:
Early last week Henry Tarter and his cousin, Ballard Tarter, were broght from their Airlie home to the Dallas hospital, both suffering from pneumonia. The cousin was able to combat the disease successfully and is now improving, but despite the best of medical care and good nursing Henry succumbed to the dread disease at about 5 o’clock Sunday evening, after an illness of five days. The remains were taken to the Chapoman undertaking parlors where they were prepared for burial, and Monday afternoon shipped to Airlie, interment taking lace in the English cemetery near there, after funeral ceremonies conducted b y Rev D.V. Poling, late of The Dalles. The whole community turned out to honor one of their most respected and worthy citizens, and many were the expressions of grief that Henry Tarter was no more. A man of noble impulses, he was well thought of by all and his loss will be severely felt by the community, as well as by his relatives and intimate friends. Henry Tarter was born in Klickitat valley, Washington, March 4, 1860, coming the same year to Oregon, where the next year his father purchased the Bevens donation land claim, and where the family has since made its home. In 1897 deceased was united in marriage with Sabrina Haight at Albany by Rev D.V. Poling and the result of the union was four children – Stephen, Charley, Guy and Etta. Mr Tarter also left three brothers and three sisters – Mrs V.A. Williams, of The Dalles; Mrs Laura Wiseman, of Walla Walla; Mrs C.E. Staats of Airlie; Prof Nicholas Tarter of Corvallis; Robert and Bura Tarter of Airlie. Dr V.C. Staats of Dallas is a nephew of the deceased.
