Vere Staats, April 3, 1927-March 16, 1997
Vere Leslie Staats Jr. of Seattle, Wash, died March 16 in Seattle as the result of an automobile accident. He was 70. 
Born in Dallas to Vere L. and Lyle Yexley Staats, he grew up in Ocean Lake, and graduated from Taft High school and Oregon State University in Corvallis. He served in the US Army Air Corps. 
He was married to Sharon Drew on Oct 24, 1952, in Ocean Lake, and in 1957 they moved to Seattle, where he worked for Boeing Aircraft until his retirement in 1994. Two sets of his great-grandparents traveled the Oregon Trail, settling in the Polk County area. Survivors include his wife, Sharon; sons, Robert V. Staats and Jerome Staats, both of Vancouver, Wash, Leslie Staats of Bakersfield, Calif, and David Staats of Seattle; daughters, Mary Ann Fleming of Walla Walla, Wash, and Jo Ann Deeds of Seattle; brothers, Lloyd Staats of The Dalles and Donald Staats of Aloha and nine grandchildren. Visitation is from 9 am until services begin at 3:30 pm on Thursday, March 20 at Farnstrom Mortuary of Independence. Interment will follow at English Cemetery in Monmouth. Contributions may be made to Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
