OBITUARY:
No greater surprise or startling news could have reached Dallas than on last Thursday when the word came from Monmouth that James A. Dempsey had shot himself. Mr. Dempsey was one of the best known men in Polk co., temperate and industrious. The only cause of his rash act seems to have been financial reverses.
Mr. Dempsey came to Oregon in 1862 and was married to Miss Alice Embree in 1866. The family stands high in the estimation of all, and is connected with some of the foremost families in Polk county. Last September, Mr. Dempsey moved his family to Monmouth from his farm near Dixie for the purpose of schooling his children and he had been working in a butcher shop. Mr. Dempsey, by an act of his own hand, leaves a most loving and indulgent family, an estimable wife, and 8 daughters and 1 son, on whom will fall heavily the grief of a father’s tragic death. His remains were laid to rest in the Dixie cemetery Saturday, surrounded by a grief stricken people. His family have the most tender sympathy of the entire community.
