OBITUARY:

PIONEER PASSES
Mary L. Hannum, of Lewisville, Closes Eventful Life.
Will Jones was in from Lewisville yesterday and informed us of the death of Mrs. Mary L. Hannum at 4 o’clock that morning, at her home 5 miles west of Lewisville, at the ripe old age of 70 years, her demise being caused by general debility incident thereto. Mrs. Hannum was one of our best known pioneer ladies, one loved and respected all over the county for her many virtues, the fond mother of a large family, and one whose demise will be mourned by her many friends of life-long standing. She was a member of the Evangelical church, a consistent Christian lady in every respect and the funeral will occur from the home at 11 o’clock Friday morning, some pastor of that faith from this city officiating.
Mary L. Ritner was born in Missouri 74 years ago, crossing the plains in the early emigration of 1852, and taking her part to the full in all the vicisitudes incident to pioneer life. Her husband, Lewis L. Hannum, crossed in the same year, and they were united in marriage in 1856. Seven children were born to the union, five of whom survive, J.A. Hannum, Joseph [Julius], Helen Turner, of Texas, Anna and Lena. She also leaves three sisters – Mrs. John Walters [Waters], Mrs. Jos. Edwards, and Mrs. Anna Dunn. Also two half brothers, John and Lewis Ritner.

PIONEER WOMAN IS CALLED
Remains of Mary Elizabeth Hannum Laid to Rest Friday
Funeral services over the remains of Mary Elizabeth Hannum, who died at her home in the Pedee district on March 27, were held on Friday conducted by Rev C.P. Gates, of Dallas, interment taking place in the Pedee cemetery.
Deceased was aged 73 years, five days and died of paralysis. Five children, and four sisters and three brothers survive her. She was born in Missouri and came to Oregon in 1852 and settled in the Big Luckiamute valley. A remarkable fact in connection with the deceased is that she lived on the place where she died for 56 years, having removed there four years after coming to Polk county.
