OBITUARY: 

Mrs Mary Paterson Smith, Salem area resident since 1897, died Wednesday morning at a local nursing home. She suffered a stroke Monday and Tuesday morning and was taken to the nursing home. Mrs Smith was born in Wisconsin June 8, 1864, and in 1882 in Iowa was married to Charles Smith, who died in 1929. The Smiths moved to Salem from Iowa and on moving here farmed in the Brush College community. They moved into Salem from Brush College in 1928. Mrs Smith was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs W.M. (Janet) McMorris of Salem; six sons, Charles Asa Smith, George Elmer Smith, Arnel J. Smith and Clifford L. Smith, all of Salem; William E. Smith of Eugene and Harvey C. Smith of Spokane; 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. The time of the funeral services will be announced later by the Clough-Barrick chapel. Interment will be in the [Z]ena cemetery.
