James Eldon Smith, 87, of Salem died March 13 in Salem. He was born in the Spring Valley area of Salem to Frank A. and Hulda (Hoven) Smith. Jim graduated in 1943 from Dallas High School, where he was quarterback for the football team and student body president. He earned a football scholarship to play for Minnesota but was drafted into the Navy during World War II. He was stationed on the USS Suwanee, a much-decorated escort carrier. Because of injuries he received in action he was awarded two purple hearts. Jim was the first person to be baptized in the newly rebuilt Dallas First Christian Church. He worked selling furniture at Meier & Frank in Salem; he owned “Jim’s 24-cent Burgers” Restaurant in Bend, and sold cars before he was medically disabled in the late 1940s. He was a member of Salem First Christian Church. Jim was a talented artist in oil, paper cast and bronze sculpture. He loved his wife, family and art. Jim and Ann enjoyed being snowbirds for a few years in Arizona. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Eula Minnick and Ila Sams. Survivors include his wife, Ann of Salem; daughters, Karen (Denny) Taylor of Silverton and Janet (Al) Gardner of Portland; son, Pat (Debby) Corey of Turner; brother, Ed Smith of Modesto, Calif; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial service was Tuesday at Salem First Christian Church. Private interment was at Zena Cemetery. Contributions are suggested to First Christian Church of Salem.
