OBITUARY:

J.C. White, a prosperous farmer of Polk county, died at his home near Oak Grove Monday night, September 14, his death being due to the general physical decline of old age. Mr White was 69 years of age at the time of his death. He was born in Missouri and crossed the plains to Oregon in 1865, settling near Oak Grove, where he has made his home ever since. Although his health had been declining for several years, his condition did not become critical until a few days ago. A message was sent to his brother, W.W. White of Wallowa county, asking him to come at once, but he was unable to reach his brother’s bedside until late last night, arriving only to find that death had already occurred. The deceased is survived by his wife, two sisters, Mrs Anna Kantner of Seattle, and Mrs Lizzie Starbuck of Portland, and three brothers, W.W. White of Wallowa county, Jackson White of Marion county, and M.F. White of Rickreall. Mr White was a prominent man of affairs on Polk county during his life, taking an especial active interest in the grange work. The funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Zena church.

Polk County Observer, Tuesday, September 15, 1908, 3:4

Hon J.C. White, well known to all old Polk county residents, passed away at his Oak Grove home Monday evening at 6:30 o’clock of softening of the brain, from which disease he had been a sufferer for some time, although it had not reached a critical stage until about two weeks ago. Mr White was aged about 70 years, and since 1865 had been a continuous resident of Polk county. In that year Mr and Mrs White came from Missouri and purchased what was known as the old Jesse Morris donation claim, where they have lived ever since. Mr White has always been a prominent worker in the grange, and has held many responsible and trustworthy positions therein. He was also quite prominent in politics, being a democrat of lifelong standing. He was not an office seeker but loved to see his friends elevated to positions of honor and trust, and to assist them to get there. Mr White’s father represented Polk county in the legislature at an early day. He was an ardent member of the Presbyterian church, and an honorable Christian gentleman in the broadest and best sense of the term. He was a man strong in his convictions, one who could not be swayed from what he conceived right and justice between man and man. In short, the world does not produce more honorable, capable or better men than John C. White, as we have found him to be in the many long years in which we have had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He has gone to a just reward. The funeral services occurred at Zena Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock, being conducted by his old pastor and friend, Rev McKinley. A large and sorrowful assembly gathered to do him this last sad honor and lay him away with fitting rites forever. Besides his wife, deceased leaves one brother, W.W. White of Enterprise, two half brothers, M.F. White of Rickreall and Jacob White of Salem, and two half sisters, Mrs E.-. Kantner of Salem and Mrs F.E. Starbuck.
