OBITUARY: 

James Scott Smart, Aug 4, 1919-March 27, 1989

Services for James Scott Smart, 69, of Salem, who died Monday in Independence, will begin at 2 pm Monday in Virgil T. Golden mortuary, Salem. He was born in Salem and attended Salem schools. He received a bachelor’s degree from Oregon State College in 1941. He taught agriculture for one year at Independence High School before attending Marine Officers Candidate School in Virginia. He was a captain during World War II in the 3rd Marine Division. He married Margaret Elizabeth Hood on Jan 17, 1946. He owned and operated Maple Mound Farm for 43 years. He was active on the Willamette Cherry Growers board for 22 years. He was appointed a commissioner on the original Land Conservation and Development Commission as a farmers’ representative for five years. He was a longtime trustee of the Spring Valley Church and Cemetery Association in Zena. Survivors include his wife; daughter, Karen Singler of Salem; son, Brian J. of Salem; sister, Margaret L. Worral of Salem; and brother, H.O. Beldin of Bellingham, Wash. Interment will be in Spring Valley Cemetery, Zena. Contributions may be made to the Salvation Army or the Union Gospel Mission. A
