OBITUARY: 

Eldon C. Sams, June 10, 1912-July 16, 1996

Eldon Charles Sams, 84, of Albany died Tuesday at Albany General Hospital. Mr Sams was born in The Dalles to William and Illa (Popenhagen) Sams. He grew up in Warrendale and Portland, where he graduated from Grant High School. He moved to Dallas and built lumber carriers for Gerlinger Co, which later became Willamette Industries. He married Ila Smith on April 12, 1939, and they moved to the Oregon coast, where he owned and operated a service station. They lived in Skamania County, Wash, for 43 years. Mr Sams worked as an electrician in a lumber mill. They moved to Albany in 1993. Mr Sams had served on the Skamania County Port Commission. He belonged to the First Assembly of God and was a Sunday school teacher for 40 years. His hobbies included silversmithing, rockhounding and singing, and he especially enjoyed telling stories. Surviving are wife Ila; daughters Donna James of Albany and Linda Wallace of Oregon City; and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Brother Paul Sams died before him. Viewing will be from 4 to 7 pm Friday at Fisher Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 10 am Saturday at Zena Church Cemetery in Salem. A memorial service will be at 2 pm Saturday at the Albany First Assembly of God. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Assembly of God Food Bank.
