Many offer help to family of brothers who drowned.
Donors provide clothing, cash and funeral services for the Salem boys.
By Rhonda Parker, The Statesman Journal
People saddened by the weekend drownings of two young brothers have donated cash, clothing, appliances and even cemetery plots to the grieving family.
Richard Rose, 12, and Christopher Rose, 11, were the oldest of sic children of Richard and Donna Rose of Salem. The boys were pulled unconscious from the lake at Cascades Gateway Park shortly before 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
The Roses had lived in Salem only since December and already were coping with Dona Rose’s terminal cancer. Even before their sons drowned, the family was being helped by Child Health Initiative, a program that helps provide health care and other services to low-income families.
“We’ve spent a lot of time with the family,” said Eleanor Miller, director of Child Health Initiative.
Now, Miller is helping coordinate and outpouring of goodwill from merchants and area residents who want to help the family.
Keizer Chapel donated the funeral services, including the coffins. Miller herself paid for cemetery plots at Spring Valley Cemetery.
Kelly’s Home Center, along with other donors, gave a washer and dryer.
Kraig Kelly of Kelly’s Home Center said the business was happy to help.
“It was something we felt was the right thing to do,” Kelley said.
Debra Dean, who was house-sitting for the Roses on Tuesday, said the community support has been wonderful. But she said the family still needs beds for their four younger children.
“They are sleeping on floors at this point,” Dean said. “They could use four twin beds.”
Many people have donated money, Miller said, including teachers from Grant Elementary School, where Richard and Christopher attended last year.
A woman from Vancouver, Wash., will pay for the brothers’ burial clothing and has offered to buy clothes for other family members.
The boys’ funeral services are set for 11 a.m. Friday at the church, 570 Madison St. NE.
Richard and Christopher, their younger brother and three younger sisters had gone swimming with family friend Eva Brother and her two grandchildren.
Brother said she turned her attention from the boys briefly and then realized they were in trouble.
She said she attempted to pull them from the lake, but couldn’t.
A man got the two boys out of the water, and people at the lake tried to perform CPR, but the children could not be revived.
Neither Christopher nor Richard could swim.
According to the initial police report, the boys were about 40 to 50 feet from shore when they began to struggle in the water.
The report said Christopher and Richard were dead on arrival at Salem Hospital.
Emergency room doctors “revived the hearts and breathing of both boys,” the report said, although at that point they were considered brain-dead.
Christopher was pronounced dead at 7:40 a.m., Sunday.
His brother, who had been flown to University Hospital in Portland, died there at 2:27 p.m. Sunday.
