OBITUARY:

Another Murder in Polk Co.

We learn from Gen McCarver that “Mountain Robinson,” well known to all old Oregonians, was killed in Spring Valley, Polk county, by an Irishman, whose name our informant did not know, on Thursday night last. Just at dusk Robinson and the Irishman, who were upon a good-natured drunken frolic, went to Robinson’s house. During the night the Irishman was heard by one of the neighbors making a noise; upon letting him in, he was found to be very drunk, and mumbling “Robinson is gone in.” In the morning the Irishman, sobered, went to Robinson’s house, and returning, informed the neighbors that Robinson was dead, and that there was blood in the house; but said he left him alive the night before, and that somebody had murdered him. On going to his house Robinson was found dead, his jaw broken, face badly beaten, and marks of a heavy blow across the forehead – the wounds apparently inflicted with a club. It is conjectured that Robinson and the Irishman got into a drunken quarrel, and that the latter killed him. Robinson was an Englishman, an inoffensive, dissipated man, and had spent most of his life (he was about 55) west of the Rocky mountains. He has drank a deluge of whisky, and several times had been frightfully wounded with knives and bullets. His acquaintances regarded him as strychnine and shot proof, but the shillelagh was too much for him. Robinson has heirs in England, but none in Oregon. He leaves a farm and considerable stock in Spring Valley.
