BIOGRAPHICAL:
GIRLS PICK CHERRIES
Swift Pace for Efficiency Set in McKinlay's Orchard
TONS OF FRUIT GATHERED
Cpaability of Misses Winifred Hays, Grace Fields, Esther Campbell, Muriel McKinlay Agreeabley Surprises Farmers.
NEWPORT, Or., Jul 27. - (Special) -There are several reasons why Oregon cherries are superior to others and four of these reason are in Newport.
They are Miss Winifred Hays,. Head of the English department of the Wahington High School, Of Portland; Miss Grace fields, of the domestic science department of the Washington High School; Miss Esther Campbell, of the English department of The Dalles High School, and Miss Muriel McKinlay of Salem, who have been picking Royal Anns and Lamberts on the McKinlay ranch near Salem for the last three weeks.
Miss Fields earned $68 in the three weeks, having picked about two and one-third tons of cherries in that time. This means an average of about 300 pounds of cherries a day. Although Miss Fields holds the record among the girls, the others made a splendid showing and, and according to Mr. McKinlay, were more rapid and dependable that boys in picking cherries.
When the call for help in the fields and orchard went out, these young women, through Miss McKinlay, who is a sister of A. P. McKinlay, owner of the Salem ranch, offered their services to him for the cherry season. Mr. McKinlay consented to give the applicants a trial, though a bit apprehensive as to their abilities in a cherry orchard. He told them to appear for work about July 1.
Promptly on that date the young women appeared at the orchard, having made the trip from Portland in Miss Campbell’s auto.
Mr. McKinlay had planned to show them just how cherry trees should be stripped of their fruit, even as he would instruct a sixth grade boy, but he soon found this unnecessary.
Perhaps there was some weariness on that first day of cherry-picking, but no one heard anything about it. Even the “boss” endeavoring through his jokes, was unable to get a “rise” out of a single member of the quartet.
At last the cherry crop was in. With their earning in their pockets, the girls broke camp and headed seaward, arriving in Newport Tuesday. While there they motored into the Siletz Basin, accompanied by Mrs. Helen Damon, of this city.
Returning to Newport Sunday, these young women passed the night at the Damon house, They motored to Salem the following day.
The young women say this Summer has been the most satisfactory that they have ever known.
