Leslie Richard Chandler
Aug. 17, 1920—November 24, 1989
Leslie Richard Chandler, 69, of Salem died Friday.
He was born in Hammond, Ind., and came to Salem from Nebraska in 1950. He had worked at Oregon State Penitentiary for two years, as Marion County deputy sheriff for 15 years, and for the Salem Public Schools for eight years, retiring in 1982.
He married Wilma Crawford on Jan. 7, 1950, in Zena. He had been active in 4-H and the Boys and Girls clubs for many years. He was known for placing flags on graves at Zena Cemetery each Memorial Day, and he enjoyed gardening. He was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and past commander of American Legion Post 136, and he was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife; son, Matthew of Salem; daughters, Leslie D. Chandler and Sydney Chandler, both of Bend; and brothers, Orlo of Lincoln, Neb., and Marland of Aurora, Colo.
Services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Interment will be in in Zena Cemetery. Visiting will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen mortuary.
Contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club or the church.
