John Towensend, an honored pioneer of Polk county, passed away at his Gooseneck home last Monday, of Bright’s disease, aged 76 years. The remains were laid to rest in the Brown cemetery near town yesterday. He is survived by an aged wife and six children. He was a brother of Hon Ira S. Townsend, and of Mrs W.C. Brown, both of whom passed away several years ago. Mr Townsend was a man of sterling worth, and one who has taken a prominent part in the making of this country, and will leave many old friends to mourn his taking off.

John Washington Townsend was born in Missouri, January 4th, 1832, died at his home near Buell, October 19th, 1908, after eight days painful suffering. He crossed the plains with his mother, brothers and one sister in 1847, settling in Polk county, where most of his life was spent. He was married to Miss Lettie E. McCarlken [sic; McCracken], January 7, 1854. Eleven children were born to them, six of whom survive him: Mrs Hannah Dickey, of Sheridan, Jesse, of McMinnville, Mrs Anna Reed, of Buell, and Mary, Mabel and Nellie, at home. He was a member of the Baptist church from early life, and also a member of Amity lodge, No 2, AF and AM, which order performed the last rites of the ceremony, just north of Dallas. He was a kind husband, father and neighbor. To know him was to love him.
