OBITUARY: 

Funeral services for James S. Robbie, 80, Independence will be held at 11 am, Thursday, Feb 22 at Calvary Presbyterian church with Rev Lehr Newhouse officiating. Interment will be in Fir Crest [Smith] cemetery under the direction of Parmenter Mortuary in Independence. He was born July 5, 1887, at Hermon, Minn, the youngest of several children born to James and Elizabeth Robbie. He died Feb 18 in the Dallas hospital. His parents came to the United States from Scotland shortly before he was born. While a small child, the family moved to Park River, N Dak. He completed his schooling at Park River where he was a baseball, football, and ice hockey star while in high school. He entered the automobile mechanic field while it was in its infancy, and worked on some of the earliest model cars. He left North Dakota in 1910, going to Albuquerque, N Mex, as a mechanic. In 1911 he moved to Portland, and in 1912 came to Dallas, still following the mechanic trade. Robbie helped start the first automotive garage in Dallas. In 1913 he and Roy Black established a garage on Main street. He married Blanche McKinnety July 30, 1913. In 1916 the Black-Robbie garage was sold and they moved to Independence. He established a garage there and continued mechanical work until his retirement in 1946. His wife died January 26, 1961. On March 9, 1963, he married Pearl Black at Dallas. He has been a member of the Odd Fellows lodge since 1919, and was a member of the Presbyterian church of Independence. Survivors besides his widow included step-sons, Carl Black, Dallas and Elmo Black, LaPuente, Calif; a niece, Elizabeth Longfellow, Newman, Calif; nephews, Robert C. Anderson, Salem, Lloyd Robbie and Jack McPherson, North Dakota. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Memorial fund at the Independence Presbyterian church.
