OBITUARY:
Norval V. Embree, Jan. 1, 1912-June 16, 1993
Norval V. Embree of Dallas died June 16, 1993 at Salem Hospital. He was 81. He was born on New Year’s Day, 1912 in Dallas to Cecil and Zora Smith Embree. He was a 1930 graduate of Dallas High School.
He married Pearl Breeden in the Evangelical Church in Dallas on Dec 20, 1941. He owned an excavation business for some time, was a dairy farmer and a logger. He retired in 1976 from Oregon state Hospital where he worked as a dietary assistant. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge in Dallas and enjoyed fishing, travel and crossword puzzles.
He was honored at a May 22nd celebration as a grandson of Marcellus A. Embree. The elder Embree came with his parents, Carey Duncan and Lucinda Fowler Embree, over the Oregon Trail via the Columbia River Route in 1884 [sic; 1844]. They were among the first settlers in the Rickreall area. The event was held at the Polk County Fairgrounds.
He was also the great-grandson of Benjamin F. Smith, who came with his parents, James and Elizabeth Wright, over the Applegate Trail in 1846 to the banks of the Little Luckiamute River. A road there still bears the family name.
Benjamin Smith married Norval Embree’s great-grandmother, Maritta Burns, who with her parents William and Rachel Ford traveled the Barlow Trail in 1848. They settled one mile south of the Little Luckiamute on the Dallas-Kings Valley Highway. The corner there is still called Burns Corner.
He moved to this old family farm before his marriage and resided there until his death.
Survivors in addition to his wife include daughters, Ruth Hargreaves of Scott Mills, Penny Cox of Dallas and Letha Randall of Salem; sisters, Nada Runkle of Salem and Laura Kooser of Springfield; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were held June 21 in the Bollman Funeral Home with Pastor Frank Barnett officiating. Interment followed in Smith Cemetery in Monmouth.
Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
