Gladys LaVern Stowell, Nov. 21, 1921-May 8, 2012
Gladys LaVern (Blatchford) Stowell, 90, of Dallas died May 8 in Dallas, her home for the past nine years. She was born in Berlin, ND, to Wilbur and Emilie (Meyer) Blatchford. In 1940 she attended the State Normal and Industrial School in Ellendale, ND. She graduated with a teaching credential and began teaching in her first school in North Dakota, which was a one-room school with only eight students. She would ride her horse two miles to the school every morning to light the fire in the stove that warmed the room. Gladys taught for 14 years in North Dakota, with her last school being in Dickey, where she was at for eight years. She later set out for Madera, Calif, to teach the fourth grade at Sierra Vista School. She bravely drove herself to California in her 1953 Chevy. She was introduced to Harold Stowell by their minister and they were married Aug 7, 1956, in Madsera. They farmed in Madera until moving to Etna, Calif, in 1973. After living in Etna for five years, Harold and Gladys moved to Oregon and set up residence in Independence, where they lived for 18 years until Harold’s death in 2002. Gladys loved reading, crocheting, music and being a homemaker. She enjoyed collecting items with flip flops, hummingbirds and snowmen. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Morley Blatchford, Vivian Fredette, LuBelle Anderson, Olive Olson and Barbara Schrum. Survivors include her children, Pam (Dave) Wright and Steven (Lynette) Stowell, all of Dallas, Jean (Jim) Goodin of Visalia, Calif, and James (Carol) Stowell of Carlton; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Graveside service was Monday at English cemetery in Monmouth. A memorial service followed at Dallas Evangelical Church. Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center handled arrangements.
