OBITUARY:
Mrs Eugene Hayter, 88, who had endeared herself to generations of Dallas residents, died Sunday at her home in Dallas. She had been in failing health for a number of years and this had been complicated by a fall a few years ago which broke her hip. Mrs Hayter was born in Dallas Sept 17, 1871, daughter of Mr and Mrs Asbury Schultz. On November 21, 1888, she married Eugene Hayter, member of a pioneer family whose members gave distinguished service to the community. In 1950 when they celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary, they had spent 61 years of their married life in their home at 208 Main street, where Mr Hayter died the following February and where she lived out the remainder of her life, making a total of 70 years spent in the same home. The couple was particularly noted for their service to the Dallas Christian church where both were life-long members and were revered for their distinguished service. Both Mr and Mrs Hayter were the last survivors of their families. He had served as vice president of the Dallas National Bank from shortly after its founding until it was purchased by the Dallas City Bank in 1934. They inherited the J.C. Hayter Book Store from his brother and the couple ran it for a number of years before selling it to the late R.R. Turner in 1943. She cared for her husband during the years of invalidism which preceded his death. This period of devoted care took a toll of her strength and after the hip injury a few years later she had been able to get about very little. But her home had remained a shrine for devoted friends. Siurviving are a daughter, Mrs H.R. Patterson, Corvallis, and a son, Charles Carey Hayter, Seattle, and one grandson, James Carey Hayter, New York City. Services were held Wednesday at 2:30 pm at the Dallas Christian church. The body laid in state at the Bollman Funeral Home for friends to visit prior to the services. Burial was beside her husband in the Embree family cemetery east of Dallas. Philip Wolfe, pastor of the church, officiated at the services.
